EXCELLENCE. IMPACT. PROGRESS.
My name is Melissa. I was a part of the Buffalo Urban League’s YOLO Program and they have really helped me to make a better future for myself and my son, Markell. I didn’t always make the best choices when I was in high school. I was a student at East High School, but I didn’t feel challenged enough and began drifting away from school. By the time I was 16 years old, I had dropped out of East High School and I was pregnant with my son. Being part of the Buffalo Urban League’s YOLO Program has been a great experience. The Buffalo Urban League helped me with my career options and encouraged me to make better choices in my life too. With the help of the Buffalo Urban League, I am now a student at Erie Community College as a Criminal Justice major. I also received a Buffalo Urban League scholarship. I am determined to move forward and set a good example for Markell.
“My name is Kelly and the Buffalo Urban League helped me save my home. When I got laid off my job because of the economic downturn, I started missing mortgage payments because I was not receiving the same kind of income as I did before I lost my job. Finally, I went to the Buffalo Urban League for help. And five months after seeing Beverly Moore, the Buffalo Urban League Housing Coordinator, I finally got a trial loan modification with my lender. After successfully paying the terms of that trial modification, my lender also reduced my interest rate from 7% to 3% and they forgave about $35,000 – $40,000 in debt.
It was a HUGE relief for me and I am grateful for Beverly Moore and the Buffalo Urban League for helping me save my home. With their help, I am now continuing with my dream of earning my college degree.”
My name is Toni and I am the mother of four beautiful children. We’re grateful for the Buffalo Urban League’s Preventive Services Program.
When I was pregnant with my daughter, Serenity, it was a really overwhelming time for me. I had three kids, all of them below the age of five. I was so overwhelmed that I felt like I was falling apart. When I met with my Buffalo Urban League caseworkers, they helped me with everything. They helped me find housing so I don’t have to keep moving from place to place with three young kids while pregnant. They helped me find counseling so I could learn how to deal with stress and so I wouldn’t feel so overwhelmed. They also helped me with paperwork and drove me to appointments so I got food stamps and cash assistance.
It’s been such a huge relief to get help from Sue and Ted and the Buffalo Urban League. They helped me get stability for my family. But even more importantly, they helped me realize that I am a strong person. Now, I feel confident and stable and safe, where before I didn’t. I want to make sure that I’m able to do everything that I can so my kids will have a better future.
